The letter, which comes in the aftermath of reports from researchers that Apple's iOS 4 and Google's Android OS collects and stores unencrypted user location data. It also asks how long the devices store data, applicable governing laws, and reasons for the practice, as well as proposed measures the companies are exploring to alleviate the privacy concerns.
The letter comes as news from federal and state investigations about mobile apps, specifically those using Apple's iOS and Google's Android OS, transmitting data to third party advertisers.
Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee, led by Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) voiced their concerns about consumer privacy policies and also asked for a response from Microsoft, Research in Motion, Nokia and Hewlett-Packard by May 9.

Motorola Flipside
The Flipside offers AT&T subscribers a powerful Android cell phone with a roomy QWERTY keyboard for a relatively low price. It's a decent choice for heavy texters, e-mailers, and app lovers. But thanks to AT&T's excellent selection of smartphones, the Flipside may have a tough time standing out.
Design and Call Quality
The Motorola Flipside is a lower-end Android phone that eschews the trend toward lightweight devices. It measures 4.3 by 2.2 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.1 ounces. It's a little on the big and heavy sides, but that's not a deal-breaker for a horizontal slider. It's made of a combination of matte and soft-touch plastics, with a glass front panel and a metal backing behind it (which is hidden when the phone is closed). The 3.1-inch, 320-by-480-pixel, glass capacitive touch screen was bright and responsive in person. The four-row QWERTY keyboard features a roomy design, generously-sized keys, and an extra-large space bar. Typing on it was sublime.
