The letter, which comes in the aftermath of reports from researchers that Apple's iOS 4 and Google's Android OS collects and stores unencrypted user location data. It also asks how long the devices store data, applicable governing laws, and reasons for the practice, as well as proposed measures the companies are exploring to alleviate the privacy concerns.
The letter comes as news from federal and state investigations about mobile apps, specifically those using Apple's iOS and Google's Android OS, transmitting data to third party advertisers.
Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee, led by Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) voiced their concerns about consumer privacy policies and also asked for a response from Microsoft, Research in Motion, Nokia and Hewlett-Packard by May 9.
